Kimco Realty Corporation (NYSE: KIM) is a real estate investment trust (REIT) headquartered in New Hyde Park, New York., that is one of North America's largest publicly traded owner and operator of open-air shopping centers. As of September 30, 2017, the company owned interests in 507 U.S shopping centers, comprising 84 million square feet of leasable space primarily concentrated in the top major metropolitan markets.
Publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) since 1991, and included in the S&P 500 Index, the company has specialized in shopping center acquisitions, development and management for more than 50 years.

History
Kimco Realty Corporation was founded in 1966 by a group of real estate investors who decided to group their shopping center assets to create a resourceful corporation. Martin Kimmel and Milton Cooper were part of the corporation's founders. Originally, Kimco Realty Corporation was focused on building its own shopping centers. During the 1980s, Cooper changed the corporation's strategy to focus on acquisitions. In 1991, Kimco became a public company in the first REIT public offering, valued at $120 million.
